Tesco is planning a major push in the UK mobile market by acquiring the stake it does not already own in MVNO Tesco Mobile from O2, reports The Telegraph. O2 and Tesco have been operating the 50/50 JV since 2003. Tesco is looking to take full control of Tesco Mobile and agree a long-term agreement with Hutchison for capacity on the merged O2/Three networks, according to unnamed industry sources.
Tesco is understood to have confirmed its intentions at a closed meeting with EU regulators about the proposed takeover of O2 by Hutchison. The latter is expected to welcome the sale of O2's interest in Tesco Mobile, believing it will help encourage competition authorities to approve the deal.
Sources indicate that EC modelling predicts a 6 percent increase in consumer prices as a result of the merger of O2 and Three. This could fall to 1 percent if Tesco Mobile was independent. Tesco Mobile has around 4.5 million customers, with City sources estimating that buying out O2's stake would cost up to GBP 300 million.
At the meeting with EU regulators, UK Broadband, which operates London-based mobile broadband network Relish, is understood to have proposed a possible deal with Hutchison to establish a new national mobile network. This could be achieved by building its own network coverage in densely populated cities, and then using rented capacity on the O2/Three network in other areas.
Hutchison has already offered up to 30 percent of capacity on the merged network for long-term agreements with retail rivals. It is scheduled to hold a follow-up meeting with EU regulators on Thursday 10 March to discuss possible deals for the market.

Russian LTE MVNO Yota, working on the network of mobile operator Megafon, has introduced a promotion to new subscribers using LTE services over routers and modems, reports Tdaily.ru. The cost of the package with the maximum broadband speed has been reduced, on average by 35 percent under the promotion. The promotion is also open to current subscribers choosing a new end-user device. The price of the package was reduced from RUB 1,400 to RUB 900 in Moscow, St Petersburg and Krasnodar, and from RUB 1,000 to RUB 650 in Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg.

Vaya addresses customer complaints after ACCC probe

Vaya, recently acquired by Australian MVNO Amaysim, said it has taken measures to address concerns raised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission following a spike in consumer complaints. Last year, the ACCC started an investigation into Vaya’s practices after customers complained about emails they received with contract variations.
Vaya said it took voluntary action: it refunded all customers who were incorrectly charged with its Plan Freeze Fee; it informed customers who complained about the Security Deposit and Plan Freeze Fee of their right to terminate their contracts without penalty; and it committed to improving the transparency of its customer communications and advertising.
The ACC said it welcomed the action. In September 2014, Vaya sent an email to selected customers stating that at the end of their 24 month contract they could keep their current plan if they paid a monthly AUD 9.90 fee called a ‘Plan Freeze Fee’, on top of their monthly access fee. Vaya sent this email to customers before their 24 month contract expired and in some cases charged the fee before customer contracts expired. In February 2015, Vaya sent an email to its customers stating that all customers were required to pay a “once-off, refundable AUD 20 Security Deposit” (Security Deposit) in accordance with Vaya’s Terms and Conditions and the Telecommunications Consumer Protection Code (TCP Code).
